I visited the newly renovated New American Wing at the MET. The courtyard is a great space for the sculpture - it's airy and well-lit. Unfortunately the collection is a bit...boring. Lots of furniture. And you can't sit in any of it!

I went down to DC this weekend, to visit Liz and Sasha. We wandered about Adams Morgan, with a stop at the zoo, and some junk stores thrown in for good measure. This photo was taken at a store that sold 60s furniture, in a cool time-capsule format.

Contestants were provided with a supply of special graffiti paint. Interestingly, most people chose to ignore the freebies, and opted to use their own paint which they'd brought to the competition.

I went to the Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle this afternoon. All the best graffiti artists from the Northeast were there, and were challenged with illustrating the word "Alive". Everyone took a different approach, and had a different style. Despite the bragging rights at stake, the atmosphere was very relaxed. Everyone seemed to appreciate a break from the rain.

I went up to Vermont for a couple days of skiing, with Adam. We skiied Stowe, and hiked a bit. There was great weather, and I had the opportunity to take some pictures.

When Chris and I trekked to Ikea two weekends ago, we neglected to purchase the most essential part of his bed frame (why would one assume it would come WITH the frame) - the mid beam. Since the mattress would collapse into the frame without this piece, we decided to fill the gap with literature and fine art, in the meantime.

Luckily, the issue was resolved last weekend.

It's interesting to observe which subway stations are properly maintained, and which aren't. When I lived on 62nd, I would get off at the F-train stop at 63rd/Lex, and it was almost always impeccably preserved.

In contrast, the 168th stop is often very dirty, has leaky ceilings, and needs a fresh coat of paint/tiles...everywhere. It's just the sort of thing that reminds you every so often of the social inequity in NYC. Just because the 63rd street stop is in a more commercial area, is it fair for those residents to receive better treatment from the MTA? One could argue that those stations experience more traffic, and as such require a higher budget. Nonetheless, the stations above 125th street are for the most part in dire need of renovation. Unfortunately the "draconian cutbacks" outlined by MTA officials present a fairly bleak outlook for improvements.

This is the first set of pictures taken with my brand spankin' new point and shoot. My Christmas bonus lept from my wallet straight to the cashier at Calumet Photo this past weekend...that was fast.

I bought a Leica D-LUX 4, and can say that my purchase already impresses me. It is quite possible that this tiny device takes sharper pictures than my hulking DSLR. Hopefully, however, the clothes don't make the man. So I'm hesitant to say that this camera is a vast improvement. It will be nice to have something you're able to tote around without getting strange looks, especially on the subway (the most photogenic of locations).

This was taken near Jin and Taylor's place, in near-total darkness. Look at the pretty colors!

It snowed yesterday... a lot. I feel a little guilty because the other night at an unofficial holiday party, I was counseling the new chief curator and his wife about New York winters. They asked me about the snow, and whether it stuck. I frowned, and replied that it's really too warm in Manhattan for any snow to stick the pavement. Well, I was wrong. Thankfully, Martin and Sonam are from Switzerland and Tibet respectively, and are at least mentally (if not materially) prepared for the winter.

I took this shot while leaning out my bathroom window. That's my superintendent salting the sidewalk. Not 5 minutes after this picture was taken, he looked up and saw me standing on the fire escape outside my bedroom window in my pajamas, with my camera. Am I as crazy as I look?

Mathilda and I went on a miniature excursion to Edgewater to get groceries (they're much cheaper, and Mathilda haz car). Somehow, and I can't recall EVER saying this, the mapquest directions we had led us to our destination flawlessly! We took it as an omen that our party would be a great success.

The theater in the background is the United Palace. Now a church led by the incomparable Rev. Ike, it was originally built in the 30s, as part of Loew's landmark theaters project. It fell into disrepair a while back, but now it hosts concerts, in addition to Sunday mass.

Annabel and I stood in line at McCarren Park to see MGMT. The hipster turnout was indeed higher than expected, and we never actually got in. Stormy clouds were also intimidating.

Happy 118th Bastille Day! The French major in me got excited when I heard that two blocks away FIAF was celebrating the holiday with food and raffles. Unfortunately it turned out to be a 4-block advertisement for a new partnership between Air France and American Airlines. Whether or not I won a vacation to Paris has yet to be determined.

I still have some pics to post that were taken over the 4th of July weekend. Right now they can be seen on my Flickr page. I've just been a bit lazy about posting them here.

Saturday was National Go Skateboarding Day, worldwide apparently. I went down to the official starting area - the Banks, which are located under the Brooklyn Bridge at Pearl Street. There were thousands of skateboarders, mostly teenagers younger than me. I felt a little out of place, but managed to blend in fairly well. A baseball cap will almost always disguise your true age.

I left after the second stop, at Coleman Playground, and skated through Chinatown on my way home. At times, you wouldn't even think you were in New York. I went long periods of time without seeing any signs in English. The chinese pagoda was particularly interesting.

John drove up for the Vampire Weekend show at Summer Stage. Unfortunately, when we arrived the line was already the length of Manhattan, and a storm was brewing. Bewildered, we found the self-proclaimed best seat in New York, and sat there for a while to admire the view.

Game Theory

My third baseball post in as many weeks! Sorry for the redundancy. I went down to visit John in the Illadelph, in a weekend crammed with baseball - games both on Friday and Saturday. The Mets took both, in a demonstration of gratitude to me for making the trek south. Next week will feature a new theme, I promise, but for now Citizens Bank ballpark will have to do. I can't help but include panoramic shots of the diamond, e.g. the shot at the bottom. My only regret is that much of the image quality is lost by blogspot's import process. If you want a higher quality image, just ask me and I'll send one to you.

Also of note was the Lou Reed concert we attended on Saturday night. Let's just say he's still got it.

I'm having trouble deciding which I like better - the new Yankee Stadium, or Citi Field. Thursday evening allowed me to get a good glimpse of what's to come out at Willet's Point. From what people tell me, it's supposed to resemble Ebbett's Field, which was demolished in 1960.

I ended up staying through all 3 innings of bonus baseball, thanks to Eli and Mark's enthusiasm. The Mets came out on top, due to a close call at the plate to end the game.

It is! The final season at Yankee Stadium, the superior baseball venue in NYC, as hard as that is to admit. Chris was nice enough to ask me to fill his empty seat at last night's game against the Rays.

I took my longboard for a spin around noon today, after lunch. My brother, Adam, just got back from Guatemala, and so I felt I had to at least try to match his sense of adventure.

Thankfully they close the roads to cars, so I didn't have to skate on the sidewalk. I didn't run over a single pedestrian! I brought my camera along for the ride.

I can't decide which shot of the saxophone player I like more, so I posted both.

Dia : Beacon

I went up to Beacon, NY with the folks on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, there was no photography allowed in the galleries. So frustrating, since everything inside the museum is photogenic, especially the museum galleries themselves. I was relegated to the exterior - no biggie. Also, at the suggestion of an ICP professor, I started shooting in RAW, and importing using Adobe LightRoom. There's a huge difference! (at least in my opinion)

The Return Of...

I apologize for the Star Wars reference in the title for this post, but I couldn't resist. Last weekend was pretty fruitless in terms photography. It was rainy Saturday, and Sunday, well let's just say that a certain Wii game was released and my priorities were temporarily inverted.

Fortunately yesterday was sunny, and for the first time in a while there were kids on the playground near where I live. Despite numerous dirty looks from the parents, I was able to get some nice candid shots. And my new telephoto lens enabled me to take some nice close-ups and maintain my distance at the same time.

Also, look out for some twilight shots during the week. Turning the clock forward has its benefits after all.

59th Street

In contrast to some inclement weather early in the weekend, Sunday proved to be completely cloudless. I took a few pictures of the 59th Street (Queensboro) Bridge. F. Scott Fitzgerald had this to say about the bridge, "The city seen from the Queensboro bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and beauty in the world." It sounds a little heavy-handed, and I didn't actually set foot on the bridge.

I tried not to copy that scene from Woody Allen's Manhattan, seen from Sutton Place.

In the beginning...

To kick off this watershed moment in history (sitting alone at my laptop), I've uploaded a picture of Dewey lingering among my newly purchased lens caps. He's just as confused as I am. I just got the camera yesterday, and am still reeling from the blow to my wallet.

I maintain the (yet to be mentioned) mission statement, and will henceforth post pictures taken during the weekend. I plan on using flavorpill, freenyc, going.com, and others as sources for events. Am I missing any?
